Jean Kim passed away on July 3, 2021
Refugee. Survivor.
Born in 1935 in what is now North Korea, Jean Kim lived through the Japanese occupation and the Korean War, losing her language, family, and home. For Kim’s family, surviving meant everything from giving up land to the Japanese government to selling rice in the city to fleeing on foot across areas covered in bodies. Kim recalls, “The refugee life was hard. The Korean War was worse than that.”
